Leroy Hood – Future of Medicine

Predictive Medicine

Leroy Hood, Genomics pioneer and founder of the Institute for Systems Biology, Leroy Hood describes our medical future and challenges us to be ready for predictive, personalized, preventative, and participatory wellness.

New Algorithm Uses Patient Data To Predict Future Health Conditions

Researchers have developed a new algorithm that uses patient data to make predictions about an individual’s future health conditions, according to a paper published in the Annals of Applied Statistics, Popular Science reports.

Health@Google: “The Genetic Revolution and Predictive Medicine” with Dr. Brandon Colby

How It Works

Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Columbia University researchers took data from a multiyear clinical drug trial involving tens of thousands of patients age 40 and older. Patient information includes gender, ethnicity, medical histories and prescriptions (Boyle, Popular Science, 6/5).

They then used the Hierarchical Association Rule Model to predict future medical conditions based on combined data on various conditions from the larger patient pool.

BAYESIAN HIERARCHICAL RULE MODELING FOR PREDICTING MEDICAL CONDITIONS

By Tyler H. McCormick, Cynthia Rudiny and David Madiganz

University of Washington, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

and Columbia University

We propose a statistical modeling technique, called the Hierar-chical Association Rule Model (HARM), that predicts a patient’s possible future medical conditions given the patient’s current and past history of reported conditions. The core of our technique is a Bayesian hierarchical model for selecting predictive association rules (such as \condition 1 and condition 2 ! condition 3 “) from a large set of candidate rules. Because this method \borrows strength” using the conditions of many similar patients, it is able to provide predictions specialized to any given patient, even when little information about the patient’s history of conditions is available. THE ENTIRE WORLD BECOMES MODERN!

WITH THE EXPANSION OF THE GLOBAL MODERN MIDDLE CLASS

Herbert E. Meyer served during the Reagan Administration as Special Assistant to the Director of Central Intelligence and Vice Chairman of the CIA’s National Intelligence Council. In these positions, he managed production of the U.S. National Intelligence Estimates and other top-secret projections for the President and his national security advisers. Mr. Meyer is widely credited with being the first U.S. Government official to forecast the Soviet Union’s collapse — a forecast for which he later was awarded the U.S. National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal, which is the Intelligence Community’s highest honor.

In this interview with Dr Nicholas Beecroft, Herb says why Western Civilisation is worth defending, why it’s the best civilisation so far and why it’s fast becoming THE global civilisation. He is very optimistic for the future but believes that the biggest challenge we face is in helping all of the rest of the world make it into modernity whilst minimising dangerous threats. He draws upon his experience in the vanguard of the defeat of the Soviet Communist system to inform our strategy to deal with existing challenges including Islamic Fundamentalism, Iran, Russia, demographic collapse, lack of faith in our civilisation, energy security and the domestic culture war.
