Future: Does the world need nuclear energy? The Debate!

DEBATE HIGHLIGHTS: Did you know that it would take between 75,000 to 145,000 5-mega watt wind generators to power the entire U.S. vehicle fleet. Did you know that 10% of nuclear fuel comes from decommissioned nuclear weapons.

Nuclear power: the energy crisis has even die-hard environmentalists reconsidering it. In this first-ever TED debate, Stewart Brand and Mark Z. Jacobson square off over the pros and cons. A discussion that’ll make you think — and might even change your mind.

What about the waste?

Radioactive waste store and nuclear waste disposal nightmare! Radioactive isotopes, such as for example Iodine 129 are detectable even in the rain! In the U.S. alone there are more than 71,000 tons of highly toxic nuclear waste they do not know how and where to accommodate the nuclear waste. This is the weight of some 35,000 SUVs contaminated on the next 200,000 years. In less than 50 years, more than 100,000 tons of nuclear waste were sunk in the ocean. Alone by the British 80%! Reprocessing plant at La Hague, France: every year 33,000,000 liters of radioactive waste flow into the sea.

The reprocessing plants produce 80% of the radioactive emissions in Europe. There exist at least 450 are pools of radioactive waste in the world.
